one more week

giddy.

i am.

in just about one week
i get mr. man back.

the same guy who would volunteer
in his daughter's
kindergarden class
to be the guest reader.

the guy who used to let
his girls push him in the pool
(yeah...not any more.
guess who does the pushing?)

 the guy who knew
just what to say to his
scared little twins
coming off
mr toad's wild ride
at disneyland

 the guy who
assembly-lined his daughters
to get in a hair washing
after swim.

this is how
the girls welcomed him home
summer of 2001
we all can't wait
til our guy is back among his
team-estrogen.

hurry, daddy.

we are waiting for you.

wardrobe wednesday: what i do when hubs is away

exhibit a:
one blue button down
(mens)

can you see where this is going?

nothing like
walking around all day,
knowing who's garb you are in.

especially when
he's far and away

ah.
get back soon.

December 14, 2011

happy anniversary: 19

it's been 19 years

19 years

wonderful
fruitful
character building
reaffirming

wish i could  lean over and
squeeze my man
tell him all this
and then give him a big smoosh

not going to happen.

at least not for a few more months.

needless to say,
i celebrate
the day i became his wife
the day i said 'i do'
the best single decision
to shape who i am today

thanks to him being dateless for this event.

 tomcat ball
san diego
june 1992

which is when he asked his sister
to find him a date.

 thank you, li.

you knew my hand
couldn't have been any higher
to volunteer for this gig.

little did i know
that this venture
would turn into this

will you look at the smile on my face?

little did i know...

happy anniversary,
honey.
i miss you dearly.

so tell me about
 your kick off?

October 28, 2011

when daddy deploys...

military families do it every day.
kids endure it.
mom's muddle through it.
families stand tall because of it.

deployment.

ain't always an easy road.
in fact,
it pretty much stinks in a lot of ways.
but this is no pity party.
in fact,
quite the opposite.

this is  my way of rooting for the home team
which is why i've compiled a
 humble how-to
on making the
most of
military deployments
(according to little ol' me)

1.  know going in,
there are going to be roadblocks.
arm your friends, your family and your handymen.
they will be called upon
at any ungodly hour
on any day.
murphey's law.
as soon as hubs pulls out,
fridge will break,
toilet will need repair
and you'll get a flat.
plan on it.
but know who to call.
and you can do this!

2.  busy is good.
stack the calendar.

plan stuff,
be places,
have things to do.
yes.
you will get tired of running around,
being here and there
but let's face it.
busy is good.

another day down, baby...

3.  say yes to help.
sometimes i forget that i don't wear a cape
and have super powers to do it all:
manage the family, deal with all the emotions that go with
single-parenthood-by-deployment,
being the mom, dad, counselor, nurse, taxi driver, tutor, cook, do i need to go on?
when friends offer up help...just say yes.
whatever it is: dinner together, a quick coffee on the run,
an encouraging phone call.
allow your friends to fill you up.
you are both better for it.

4.  celebrate the little things.
whether it's weekly, monthly or daily
celebrate how far you've come.

 'kisses from daddy':
stash enough hershey kisses in a jar
(enough for each family
member for each day daddy is gone).
eat one kiss a day, every day counting down
his big return watching the jar get fewer and fewer.
ode to the dadster ala chocolate!
who doesn't love that?
celebrate your anniversary:
treat the fam (or yourself) to a special 'outing'
on the once-a-month
anniversary declaring 'another month down'.
starbucks?
mcdonalds?
golden corral?
your choice...but celebrate.
we once made a paper change marking each day daddy would be gone
(yes, that sucker wrapped around the entire
downstairs twice, i think).

we decorated special rings marking the halfway point
as well as each month anniversary.
those were the special days,
making sure we commemorated properly.

regardless of how you do it, celebrate
every calendar milestone you accomplish.
you are his team,
keeping it real back home.
5. surround yourself with good
 good peeps:
seek out the friend who isn't going
to let you sit in your own muck too long.
the one who's going to tell you
how strong you are and how you can and will do this,
then pour you a glass of wine and let you vent.
 good habits:
eat well.
we all know the convenience of mickey dee's
but not every day.
okay?
promise?

good sleep:
go to bed early.
we need to be on our toes
to handle what comes next.

good habits:
exercise.
find the time.
it will prove you well.

we can do this, peeps.
this is the stuff our country was founded on.
and one thing i know for sure.
we are stronger than we think.
with God behind us,
we are invinsible.

our guys are counting on us.

now this next part is for all you
non-military out there.

i know you mean well.
very well.

i'm going to let you in on a wee secret.
here are the things said (however well meaning) that don't
always bode well
while we are in the thick of things.

"deployment?  again?
oh, you must be used to it by now."
nope.
never.
we never get used to it.
much like childbirth.
just because we've experienced it,
doesn't mean
we are used to it.

another doozy,
probably not going to go over well...
" gosh.  4 months already?
wow.  that's going fast"

not so much.
believe me,
we are counting down each day,
sometimes each minute.

you get the drill.
just put your sensitive hat on.
we can be very fragile
so go in gentle.

we are strong but not perfect.
best thing about deployment, however,
homecoming.

more on that later.

any thoughts on this subject?
experience?
please share.

friday eye candy: mens suiting

do we not love our men in a suit?

not sure about you,
but my guy is either in his work uniform
(go navy)
or in his workout clothes,
the fitness machine he is.

but
oh boy,
mr. man had to step
up his game.

recent on-the-job travels have opened up the
doors o' fashion for
him and his suit section of his closet
which is currently housing very fashionable,
circa 1995 suits and ties to match.
lovely.

latest home project:
find-a-suit
was in full operation.

this was the look i was going for...

modern
slim
contemporary

then i get this
ad from
banana republic

hot diggity,
mad men.

 my work was done.

 can't go wrong
 here
  clean lines

 slim fit

 seeeeexy

smooth

what do you think?
thanking on-the-job travels.

10 days in: move-in complete

it's official.

after 19 years of moving

we have a new record.

10 days after
household goods were delivered
all boxes have been put away,
rooms are complete,
stuff on walls,
junk put away.

yee haw.

whoopee.

not sure why this is so.

perhaps
three hands-on teenage girls
put us into
hyper speed.

team brookes in full effect.

we clinked our glasses last night
to a collective
job well done.
(3 milks, one wine and one beer)

feels good.

nothing gives you more confidence
than good old fashioned hard work,
and a job accomplished.

not much better than that,
except perhaps this...

...waiting for me
when i woke up

mr. man is back to his
lovely routine.

if you aren't sure what i'm referring to,
see this post.

today is going to be a good day.

all i'm saying.

tell me about the last time you
clinked your glasses in celebration.

cornier the better...
you know me.

Happy Dad's Day

this is the day to honor dad's.

my dad:

i got lucky in this department.

my dad showed me love
filled me with confidence
and raised me to be an independent thinker

i cherish the times when i would
earn two cents a minute
massaging his back

or putting endless boop-boops
in his permed hair

or when he'd let me accompany him
on his guitar
as we
serenaded each other
with duets.

funny, we gals.
no matter how
old we are,
we'll always be
our daddy's little girl.

love you, dad.

pop-in-law:

pop pop,
you are solid as a rock, you are.

thank you for modeling for my husband on how to
knock someone's socks off
simply with the written word.

thanks for letting me call you
in moments of panic
only to dole out sound, calm advice.

thank you for leaving a legacy of espn reports:
religious phone calls
each and every week
asking for team brookes sports reports
now eagerly awaited.

you always seem to know
who scored the last goal, or
the PR of the last 1600 that
was waiting to be broken.

you are a good man, pop pop
and an even better role model

happy dad's day.

mr. man:

how did i ever know
he would turn out to be
such an incredible dad.

the guy who changed diapers in the
middle of the night so i could get an extra wink.

the guy who has always taken care of the
laundry and yes, delivered it folded.

the quiet guy who always seems to
say the best stuff when emotions are running
high on team estrogen.

the guy who has undying patience when
it comes to being the homework guru.

our hero of the century
making us proud of his undying service
to his family and his country.

love you to no end, honey.

Mr. Man Better Watch His Step...

Warning:

this post has nothing to
do with...

home interiors
family harmony
before and afters
recipes
holidays
or
fashion

This is really a confession, people.

I thought I was being a good mom.
I thought I was doing the right thing.
I thought I was being a good wife.

You see,
I innocently took my three daughters to a movie.
An afternoon of fun, frivolity and cinema escape.

Thought I'd give
Mr. Man some time to do those chores
he's been meaning to get to but never had the time to.

I had NO desire to actually see this particular movie.
That is the selfless mom I thought I was being.
It's all for the kids, right?
Hmph.

So I took my girls to:

Ah.
You know what I'm talking about...

the kid with the hair
the voice
the moves
the 12 year-old-girl following
you-tube phenom

Yeah.
This is the guy.

I knew I was in trouble when I started flashing the
heart finger thing during the movie.
Oh and I started raising my hands in the air, like I just didn't care.
I also might have started chanting for the Bieb's right there in the theater.

I know.
I was falling.
hard.

He is only 16 years old.
A bit young for a crush, I know.

I can't really talk to you about this any further
until you've actually seen the movie.
I think you might better understand.
Please tell me you understand...

It's official.
I'm a belieber.

Came home and had to RE-WATCH the latest DVR'ed episode of
Glee:
"Justin Bieber experience"

Oh and what are the chances that the crew would pick a
40 something mom to be the
"one less lonely girl" to head up on stage?

Thought so.

Yes, I know.
I'm currently trying to get a life
so I can pull myself together.

Just me?

Say it ain't so.

Am I all alone here?

Happy Valentines Day

Happy V-Day to you!

Not sure about you,
but Valentine's Day
"Brookes style"
usually involves
home made:

home made cards,
home made food,
home made celebration.

As you can see from last year,
I do not tell a lie.

This is what the girls and I woke up to this morning.

4 Valentines Day cards
AND
our coveted morning note.

That's bonus noteage around here.
(Did I just make up a word?)

What a good man.

Made one of our favorite dinners last night,
Roasted Paprika Chicken
(you can find the recipe in this post,
if you are interested)

Then the fam enjoyed some
after-dinner, fresh from the oven,
warm sprinkle brownies
especially made by teenage daughter.

Can you say "hit"?
Because they were.

Simple chocolate goodness.

Perfect.

As you can see,
we ate them so fast,
I didn't even have time
to get a "before" picture.

That's okay.
You get the gist.

So where's
the romancy-schmancy part on
the biggest "love" day of the year?

Okay.
Hubs and I might have snuck in a bubble bath
after the family soccer game in the park and
before mamma made dinner.
Don't worry.
That's all the detail you will get on that one.

So that was it.
No real hoopla, but plenty of goodness.

Now let me hear about YOUR V-day?
